Owens embraces opportunity after earning Arkansas State starting quarterback job

Trey Owens spent months competing for Arkansas State’s starting quarterback job without knowing publicly whether he would be the player taking the first snap against Memphis.

When the opportunity finally came, Owens was ready to enjoy playing football again.

Owens met with reporters this week for the first time since earning the starting job and making his Arkansas State debut in Saturday’s 42-24 loss at Memphis. The Texas transfer completed 21 of 30 passes for 325 yards and a touchdown in the first live college action of his career.

For Owens, earning the job represented the culmination of work that began long before the season opener.

“It was awesome, just truly over the summer and over the spring just working my tail off,” Owens said. “Not only on the field and with the guys, but off the field, create more relationships. That way I have that stance and a leadership role.”
