Hendricks, Van Andel Earn Sun Belt Weekly Honors After Win at Troy
Two Arkansas State standouts have been recognized by the Sun Belt Conference following the Red Wolves’ dominant 23–10 road victory over Troy.
Redshirt senior defensive lineman Demarcus Hendricks was named Sun Belt Defensive Player of the Week, while junior kicker Clune Van Andel earned Special Teams Player of the Week honors for the second consecutive week.
Hendricks, a native of San Antonio, Texas, tied his career highs with seven tackles and two sacks in the win, anchoring a defensive front that delivered one of the most complete performances in program history. The Red Wolves finished the night with nine total sacks — tied for the most by any FBS team this season — and held Troy to just 187 total yards, the fewest allowed by Arkansas State to a Sun Belt opponent since 2006 (FIU, 186).
Hendricks also added his first pass breakup of the season and was credited with a quarterback hurry as part of a relentless defensive effort that set the tone from start to finish.
Van Andel, a Grand Rapids, Michigan, native, continued his strong season by scoring 11 points in the victory. The junior connected on field goals from 30, 31, and a career-long 53 yards, while also going 2-for-2 on extra points to extend his streak of consecutive PATs to 56 straight.
His 53-yard make marked his third field goal of 50 yards or more this season and tied for the sixth-longest kick in school history.
Both players played pivotal roles in keeping the Red Wolves in the hunt for a berth in the Credit Union 1 Sun Belt Football Championship Game presented by Visit Pensacola.
Arkansas State (5–4, 4–1 Sun Belt) returns to action Saturday morning, hosting Southern Miss at 11 a.m. inside Centennial Bank Stadium. The game will air live on ESPNU and the EAB Red Wolves Sports Network.
