JONESBORO — Arkansas State watched a fourth-quarter lead slip away Saturday night as Louisiana-Monroe used a late field goal to defeat the Red Wolves 19-17 at Centennial Bank Stadium.
ULM kicker Abram Murray connected on a 40-yard field goal with 1:49 remaining, capping a seven-play, 53-yard drive that erased a one-point Arkansas State advantage. The Red Wolves had one final opportunity to reclaim the lead, but an interception ended their comeback attempt.
The loss came despite Arkansas State carrying a 14-9 lead into halftime and briefly moving back in front on Clune Van Andel’s 41-yard field goal with 5:42 remaining in the fourth quarter.
ULM controlled the line of scrimmage throughout the contest, rushing for 268 yards on 49 attempts while holding the football for 35 minutes, 37 seconds. The Warhawks finished with 389 yards of total offense compared with 313 for Arkansas State.
Following the game, Arkansas State coach Butch Jones expressed frustration with his team’s performance, particularly its inability to stop the run and execute in critical situations.
“First of all, give Monroe credit. They came in here and obviously did what they needed to do to win the football game,” Jones said. “From our standpoint, did not play to our standard tonight, did not play to our expectation.”
